When You don't Treat Severe Hypertension, It Leads To Heart Failure, Strokes, Kidney Failure And Death by Kim Williams The convergence of evidence suggests that an affordable plant-based diet can help prevent and even reverse some of the top killer diseases in the Western world, and can be even more effective than medication and surgery. This could save Medicare billions of dollars, but medical training continues to underemphasize nutrition education , in part, perhaps, because lifestyle interventions go against the prevailing conventional wisdom. The USDA, in formulating its dietary guidelines, has been accused of both acting with bias and ignoring relevant research. However, the most recent guidelines take a step in the right direction by recommending a shift to a plant-based diet, which Kaiser Permanente, the largest U.S. managed care organization, has moved in the direction of supporting. Lifestyle medicine attempts to find, prevent, and treat the causes of disease. Patients should receive fully informed consent for treatment, meaning they should be informed about all of their options including dietary changes. Doctors report they don’t practice preventative cardiology because they fear their patients won’t change their diet. Kim Allan Williams, MD, MACC, FAHA, MASNC, FESC was born in Chicago, and attended the College of The University of Chicago (1971 to 1975), followed by the University of Chicago’s Pritzker School of Medicine (1975 to 1979), internal medicine residency at Emory University (1979 to 1982), and overlapping fellowships in Cardiology at the University of Chicago (1982 to 1985), Clinical Pharmacology (1984 to 1985), and Nuclear Medicine (1984 to 1986). He is board certified in Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular Diseases, Nuclear Medicine, Nuclear Cardiology and Cardiovascular Computed Tomography. Dr. Williams joined the faculty of the University of Chicago in 1986, specializing in clinical cardiology, nuclear medicine, and nuclear cardiology. He served as Professor of Medicine and Radiology and Director of Nuclear Cardiology at The University of Chicago School of Medicine until 2010. Among numerous awards and honors for his teaching in the medical school, residencies and fellowships, he was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha in 2008. In 2010, he became the Dorothy Susan Timmis Endowed Professor of Medicine and Radiology and Chairman of the Division of Cardiology at Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit, MI. At Wayne State, he has started the Urban Cardiology Initiative – a program of education of physicians on disparities in healthcare, primary school education on cardiovascular health and community health screening in inner-city Detroit. In November 2013 he returned to Chicago as the James B. Herrick Endowed Professor of Medicine and Cardiology at Rush University Medical Center. Dr. Williams has published numerous peer-reviewed articles, monographs, book chapters, editorials, and review articles in the field of nuclear cardiology and minority health issues, with emphasis on education and innovations in perfusion imaging and quantitation of ventricular function. His research interests include selective adenosine receptor agonists, fluorinated perfusion PET imaging, cardiac computed tomography for plaque characterization, health care disparities and payment policy, and appropriate use of cardiac imaging. Other awards and honors have come from such diverse organizations as the American Oil Chemists Society, the National Institutes of Health, The American Society for Neurochemistry, and the Ketogenic Diet Special Interest Group of the American Epilepsy Society. Dr. Seyfried previously served as Chair, Scientific Advisory Committee for the National Tay-Sachs and Allied Diseases Association. And one of the suggestions we made was to change the traditional mayonnaise for an avocado-based mayo. So in today's video we will teach you how to make a delicious avocado and cilantro mayo, with few calories and lots of flavor. Want to make your dishes even tastier? Write down the ingredients 1/2 cup of sour cream or natural yogurt; 1 avocado, ripe; 1 handful of chopped cilantro; 1 garlic clove, chopped; 2 tablespoons of lemon juice; Salt to taste; Black pepper to taste; Directions In a food processor, add sour cream (or yogurt), avocado, cilantro, garlic and lemon juice. Blend until smooth. Add salt and pepper to taste. Done! Store the mayo in a closed container in the fridge, and eat whenever you want to. This mayo is good for 3 or 4 days, if kept under refrigeration. Use it on snacks, potatoes, salads, and even on hamburgers. It makes everything delicious! How many times have you found yourself reading the labels of what you are buying at the market? We know that many people don't have the habit of reading labels to see what ingredients are used in the foods they eat. But it needs to change! Once you start paying attention to the labels of what you consume, you will value those foods that don't need any labels. The result will be a healthier life for you. Have you noticed how much sulphite is present in your diet? Sulphites are largely used in the food industry as preservers and antioxidants, and are classified as "food additives". When used, it must be declared on the label in this way: preserver and name/number of the additive. They are formed naturally in some foods and drinks as a result of fermentation, as in the case with beer and wine. Sometimes, wine producers use sulphur dioxide (which, in contact with alkaline solutions, produces sulphites) to preserve the wine. The use of sulphites in most countries usually follows the recommendations of JEFCA, being limited by specific legislations that are established based on use safety and technological necessity. The daily acceptable ingestion of sulphite, according to JEFCA's recommendation, is 0,7mg/kg. So, if you weigh 70kg, you can ingest up to 49mg of sulphite per day. However, it may be hard to control this amount since sulphites can be present in fruits, vegetables and greens, refined sugar, and vinegar. You can also find sulphite in natural juices, jams, frozen fries, frozen shrimp and lobster, mushrooms, dried fruits, meats, wines, beers, etc. What happens when we ingest more than the recommended amount of sulphite? You know that feeling of heavy head, when you wake up after drinking too much wine? Sulphite sensitivity may cause allergies, dermatitis, lung problems, gastrointestinal problems and heart issues.
