The USDA, in formulating its dietary guidelines, has been accused of both acting with bias and ignoring relevant research. However, the most recent guidelines take a step in the right direction by recommending a shift to a plant-based diet, which Kaiser Permanente, the largest U.S. managed care organization, has moved in the direction of supporting. Lifestyle medicine attempts to find, prevent, and treat the causes of disease. Patients should receive fully informed consent for treatment, meaning they should be informed about all of their options including dietary changes. Doctors report they don’t practice preventative cardiology because they fear their patients won’t change their diet. Kim Allan Williams, MD, MACC, FAHA, MASNC, FESC was born in Chicago, and attended the College of The University of Chicago (1971 to 1975), followed by the University of Chicago’s Pritzker School of Medicine (1975 to 1979), internal medicine residency at Emory University (1979 to 1982), and overlapping fellowships in Cardiology at the University of Chicago (1982 to 1985), Clinical Pharmacology (1984 to 1985), and Nuclear Medicine (1984 to 1986). He is board certified in Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular Diseases, Nuclear Medicine, Nuclear Cardiology and Cardiovascular Computed Tomography. Dr. Williams joined the faculty of the University of Chicago in 1986, specializing in clinical cardiology, nuclear medicine, and nuclear cardiology. He served as Professor of Medicine and Radiology and Director of Nuclear Cardiology at The University of Chicago School of Medicine until 2010. Among numerous awards and honors for his teaching in the medical school, residencies and fellowships, he was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha in 2008. In 2010, he became the Dorothy Susan Timmis Endowed Professor of Medicine and Radiology and Chairman of the Division of Cardiology at Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit, MI. At Wayne State, he has started the Urban Cardiology Initiative – a program of education of physicians on disparities in healthcare, primary school education on cardiovascular health and community health screening in inner-city Detroit. In November 2013 he returned to Chicago as the James B. Herrick Endowed Professor of Medicine and Cardiology at Rush University Medical Center. Dr. Williams has published numerous peer-reviewed articles, monographs, book chapters, editorials, and review articles in the field of nuclear cardiology and minority health issues, with emphasis on education and innovations in perfusion imaging and quantitation of ventricular function. His research interests include selective adenosine receptor agonists, fluorinated perfusion PET imaging, cardiac computed tomography for plaque characterization, health care disparities and payment policy, and appropriate use of cardiac imaging. Dr. Williams has served on numerous committees and boards at the national level, including the American Society of Nuclear Cardiology (ASNC), the American Heart Association (AHA), the American Medical Association (AMA), the American College of Cardiology (ACC), the Certifying Board of Nuclear Cardiology, the Certifying Board of Cardiac Computed Tomography, the Society of Cardiovascular Computed Tomography and the Association of Black Cardiologists (ABC). Is A Creased Earlobe An Indicator Of Heart Disease?

If you have ever heard that a crease in the earlobes – specifically one that runs diagonally – indicates an increased risk of heart disease, you aren’t alone. More than 30 studies over the past few decades have examined whether an earlobe crease is a sign of heart disease or suggests a higher-than-normal risk of heart trouble.

The good news is that there’s no medical consensus on whether or not an earlobe crease is a meaningful marker for the presence of heart disease or a propensity toward it. Some studies have found an association between earlobe creases and heart disease and some have not, leading to the conclusion that the prevalence of earlobe creases probably increases with age, as does heart disease.

So if you do have a creased earlobe, don’t fret – but it is prudent for everyone, creased lobes or not, to take preventive steps when it comes to heart disease: eat a heart healthy diet like my Anti-Inflammatory Diet; consider taking a fish oil supplement; manage lifestyle risk factors by getting regular exercise and not smoking; learn a relaxation exercise and practice regularly; and know your personal history of heart disease and discuss it with your doctor.

Also realize that merely following the classic lipid profile is no longer enough to truly assess your risk. Seek out an integrative health provider to evaluate your risk by assessing markers that are growing in importance based on recent research like: ApoB, Lp(a), ultrasensitive CRP and a coronary calcium CT scan.

Most makeup wipes aren’t biodegradable, which means it takes them hundreds of years to break down. Flushing them down the toilet is just as dangerous– wipes are made up of thousands of tiny plastics, which can leach into our water sources and cause a huge ecological hazard. Even worse, makeup wipes and other formulas for removing makeup are rarely designed for ultimate skin kindness. Most prioritise stripping the makeup off your face over actually looking after your skin. This means that they cause irritation due to chemicals used to prevent micro-organisms from contaminating the wipes. These chemicals include formaldehyde-releasing chemicals, solubilizers, surfactants, and emulsifiers. Even if you don’t know exactly what they are, you know without research that they’re bad for you. It’s no wonder that we’re so fed up with the makeup removal options we’re presented with. To add salt to the wound, you’ll need to shell out quite a bit of money if you want a product that at least does half the job it promises on its packaging. If you’re sick of wasting time and money on makeup removers that don’t work, inflame your skin, and wreak havoc on the environment, it’s time you introduced yourself to the natural alternative methods that are on offer. We’ll be covering all of our favourite methods in this video, so if you’re keen to learn more, grab yourself a notebook and prepare to take notes… 1. Coconut or olive oil One of the simplest methods of natural makeup removal uses an ingredient you probably already have sitting in your kitchen cupboards: oil. The reason why oil works so well for removing makeup is that oil dissolves oil. As makeup products are usually made up of a combination of oils and waxes, and your face secrets oil, oils like coconut or olive oil can quite easily remove the makeup from your face. To use coconut or olive oil to remove makeup, apply a small amount of your oil of choice to a cotton bud or face pad, then gently wipe your face in circular motions. Once your makeup has been removed, wash your face with a cleanser and rinse clean with cool water. If you’re prone to breakouts, choose olive oil over coconut oil, as it’s less likely to clog up your pores. 2. Witch hazel and olive oil If you want to benefit from more than just a plain oil on your face, one combination that works particularly well is witch hazel and a nourishing oil like olive oil. Witch hazel is a natural ingredient that’s also used as an astringent in skincare routines. You might have a bottle of the stuff lying around if you’ve recently had your ears pierced, as it’s usually always recommended for cleaning and disinfecting. When you’re using witch hazel on your face, go for an alcohol-free product to prevent it from drying out your skin. Combine 2 tablespoons of olive oil with 3 tablespoons of the witch hazel, then apply a small amount of oil to a cotton bud or pad. Gently wipe your face with the pad, rinse your face with cool water, then continue with your usual evening skincare routine. 3. Jojoba oil and beeswax balm For anyone who’s serious about long-term natural makeup removal, making your own simple balm is the way forward. Combine jojoba oil with beeswax to create a formula that’s kind yet effective on your face, and costs virtually nothing to make in batches that will last for several months at a time. To make a jojoba oil and beeswax balm, mix a quarter of a cup of jojoba oil and one tablespoon of beeswax. Melt the beeswax into the oil, then pour the formula into a container. Allow it to cool and harden before use. When it’s finished cooling, apply a small amount of the balm to a cotton ball or pad, then wipe the mixture around your face. Finish by washing your face and completing your skincare routine. 4. Honey and baking soda cleanser There are so many skincare benefits of honey that ultimately make it one of the most appealing natural ingredients for removing your makeup. Honey gently removes dirt and impurities without stripping the skin of natural oils, and boasts a range of antibacterial and probiotic properties that are thought to reduce breakouts and soothe sensitive skin. To get the most out of a honey makeup remover, combine it with baking soda and a few drops of oil.

Now that you know the function of each ingredient, write down the recipe: 1 coffee spoon Johnson's baby oil; 1 tablespoon egg white; 1 teaspoon baking soda; Making it is very straight-forward: Combine all three ingredients in a glass or plastic bottle and mix well. After that, apply the mixture over your skin, spreading it well. Massage gently, as if doing a light exfoliation, and let it act for an hour. Rinse with warm water and apply sunscreen. Do this exfoliation twice a week until you reach the desired results. You can apply this solution on your armpits, groin, and any other parts of your body where you have spots you want to lighten. But, before applying it, do a patch test: Apply a small amount of the mixture on your forearm and wait for 24 hours. If it doesn't show any signs of irritation, you can use it safely.
