We all experience the sensation of burning feet sometimes but when it becomes a constant thing that keeps us up at night, that becomes a problem. The sensation of burning feet can range from mild to severe and can be accompanied by other sensations like numbness or pins and needles. But what is it that causes our feet to burn in bed at night and what can we do about it? When we experience burning feet at night the most common cause is nerve damage or “neuropathy”. When our nerves are damaged, they can start to become overactive. This causes misfirings that send pain signals to our brain even in situations when there actually is no pain. In cases of neuropathy where there is nerve damage, it’s generally the legs and feet that experience damage first. What causes neuropathy? There are many different things that can cause nerve damage, but there are two that are more common than others: • Diabetes Diabetes is a disease that occurs when your pancreas doesn’t create enough insulin. This can cause your blood sugars to become too high. If not managed, diabetes can lead to damaged nerve cells in your hands and feet, which can then lead to the burning sensation that you feel at night. • Alcohol When you drink alcohol in small capacities it’s unlikely to have any drastic effects. But overuse of alcohol can lead to a wide range of health concerns including neuropathy. Quitting drinking can help to stop further nerve damage and may even be able to improve symptoms. Other causes of neuropathy and burning feet include: • Hypothyroidism • Athlete’s foot • Improper footwear • Physical injury • Allergies to sock materials • Dermatitis • Multiple Sclerosis It also important to know other sensations can accompany burning feet syndrome which may mean you have another underlying medical condition Other symptoms may include, but are not limited to: • Numbness • Sharp/stabbing pains • Achiness • Heaviness of the feet • Excessively warm feet • Redness of the feet • The sensation of pins and needles If you feel that you are experiencing burning feet syndrome and are losing sleep at night because of it, you may want to speak to a doctor to find out what is going on. Burning feet syndrome is usually associated with an issue within the body that should be addressed promptly. Because there are so many possible causes of burning feet syndrome, your doctor may use several different methods to try to diagnose the underlying problem. These methods may include, but are not limited to, physical examinations, blood tests, and nerve functioning tests and nerve conduction velocity tests. So what Treatments are available The exact treatment that you receive for burning feet syndrome will depend on what your underlying diagnosis is. For example, if it is found that diabetes is the underlying issue, then you will be treated for diabetes accordingly. In the meantime, there are some things that you can try to help reduce the pain associated with burning feet syndrome: • Invest in a pair of supportive, comfortable shoes • Try a nerve therapy like electrical nerve stimulation, magnetic therapy, laser therapy, or light therapy • Try an alternative therapy like acupuncture • Use ice baths to soak your feet • Try using a pain relief topical cream • Massage your feet regularly to promote circulation and blood flow. Keep in mind that these measures are just to help with pain relief temporarily until you find a more concrete solution. Remember that burning feet syndrome is usually associated with a larger underlying issue. For that reason, you should speak to a doctor as soon as possible to address any underlying concerns that may be present before they worsen.
